Washington D.C. Trip

The last week of March, Joe and I took a little get away trip to Washington D.C. to do some sight seeing. Joe had never been before, and the last time I went was when I was 10 and don't really remember much about it, other than each state had it's own Christmas tree on the lawn of the White House. We stayed in Old Town Alexandria, the birthplace of Robert E. Lee. The first day we went to the Smithsonian museum of American History where we saw all of the gowns of the first ladies, Judy Garland's Ruby Red Slippers from the Wizard of Oz, and took a tour through all of the American Wars. On Day two we visited the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History where they have all of the dinosaurs on display and the Hope Diamond, a for sure crowd favorite. We walked up to the Washington Monument as well, but didn't go up to the top as it was too cloudy to really be able to see anything. My feet were hurting so bad, Joe made me stop and buy some appropriate walking shoes, so by day 3, I was ready to rock and roll again. We bought trolley tickets and rode through the financial triangle and past the Capitol. On the front lawn of capitol hill, there were people protesting of all things...circumcisions. I personally feel that there are more important things in life to take a stance on...wish I had the extra time that they must have as well. We hopped off the trolley at the Jefferson Memorial, then walked through the FDR memorial on our way to the Lincoln Memorial. From here, we walked up to the Korean War memorial and WWII memorial on our way to the White House...whew, 2.5 miles later, I needed a break! After lunch, we ventured off to Arlington Cemetery where we saw the eternal flame next to JFK and Jackie Kennedy's grave site, as well as the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers (there's 3 in there). The last day, we took the metro up to Dupont Circle and walked passed all of the different embassies, then met up with Joe's dad's cousin for lunch. He drove us through Georgetown and then we ate at a restaurant in downtown D.C. That evening, we met up with a friend of Ryan's for dinner at the famous, Ray's Hell Burger in Arlington, VA. By the time we left to fly back home, I was spent. We had a wonderful time and I would definitely recommend going...especially when all of the cherry blossoms are in bloom!
